🍔 Ctrl + Serve

A typing game about burgers, legacy, and the crushing weight of parental expectations

Description

Ctrl + Serve is a typing-based restaurant simulation game. Every single thing you do, such as walking to a station, chopping an ingredient, taking an order, or assembling a burger, is done by typing commands. Just you, your keyboard, and the slow dawning horror that a customer has been waiting at the register for forty-five seconds while you were busy mistyping "lttuce".

Premise

Otto

You play as Otto. You have a computer science degree that cost a small fortune and has thus far been useful for exactly nothing. Life is great.

DadMom

Then, your parents, the beloved and well-respected Sir and Loin, proprietors of the best burger joint in the neighbourhood, announce they're leaving for vacation....and they're leaving you in charge of the restaurant.

This is your shot at redemption. Your chance to prove that those four years of higher education weren't a complete waste. Your opportunity to turn "burger flipper with a bachelor's degree" into "burger entrepreneur with a bachelor's degree."

How It Works

The restaurant has seven stations and you'll be bouncing between all of them:

Station Task
🧾 RegisterTake customer orders before they lose patience
🍅 PrepareChop ingredients to stock your supply
🔪 SharpenRestore your knife's edge and maximize ingredient yield
🔥 GrillLoad and cook patties
🍟 FryerPlunge a basket of fries in the deep fryer
🍔 AssembleBuild the order, bottom to top
🛎️ ServeHand the order off to the customer

To move between stations, type the station name. To do anything at a station, type the provided prompt. To ruin everything, mistype something at a critical moment.

Progression

Each in-game day is three minutes of increasingly chaotic service. More customers arrive as the days progress and the pressure mounts. Survive a day and you'll be rewarded! Between shifts, visit the shop to spend your earnings on upgrades. Improve your movement speed, keep customers patient a little longer, boost your knife's durability, and upgrade your stations for better yield. A new station will also unlock as the week progresses, expanding what you can do, and naturally, the number of things that can go wrong.

The Stakes

At the end of the week, your fate, and the restaurant's, is decided. Survive the week and your parents come home to pass judgement on everything you’ve done. They’ll review the receipts, the Google reviews and the state of the grill. The unspoken questions of whether a computer science degree was really necessary to flip a burger or use a deep fryer hang in the air.

Three different endings. One is earned. One is survived. One comes with a brand new station and a lot of humility. And soap. You're going to want to see them all at least once just to say you did.

In all three endings, Otto still doesn't have a job in computer science. Some things are beyond the game's ability to fix.
